Turning Up The Heat On Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria
 
Bacteria are evolving resistance to antibiotics at an alarming rate, fueled by decades of overuse of the drugs in medicine and agriculture. Now researchers have developed a method that could slow the spread of resistance genes in the environment by reducing their release through treated sewage
When people take antibiotics, they can excrete resistant bacteria from their guts and flush them into the sewer system. The wastewater and associated solids then travel to a treatment plant. Farmers often apply treated wastewater solids, known as sewage sludge, to their fields as fertilizer. Bacteria in the sludge can share antibiotic resistance genes with other microbes in the environment. Yet according to Timothy LaPara, an environmental engineer at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, scientists lack a good method to remove antibiotic resistant bacteria during sewage treatment.
 
Most treatment plants incubate sludge in "digester" tanks at 37°C, where sewage bacteria decompose organic material and destroy pathogens, including other bacteria. Two types of digesters – aerobic digesters with added oxygen, and anaerobic without – select for different populations of bacteria.
"A lot of these digesters are operated at our body temperature, which actually is a very good condition for resistant bacteria to survive," says La Para.
So he and colleague David Diehl examined how temperature affected the quantities of resistance genes in bacterial populations within digesters. They studied five bacterial genes encoding tetracycline resistance and one gene encoding the integrase of class I integrons, which scientists have linked to multidrug resistance. The researchers processed sludge from a nearby treatment facility in lab-scale aerobic and anaerobic digesters at four different temperatures: 22°C, 37°C, 46 °C, and 55°C.
Quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed that in the anaerobic reactor, the amounts of antibiotic resistance genes declined with increasing temperature. LaPara presumes that higher temperatures killed resistant bacteria or caused them to lose resistance genes. The effect was most dramatic for the integrase gene: At the highest temperature, the scientists could remove 99.99% of it, LaPara says. In contrast, during aerobic digestion, higher temperatures did not substantially change the prevalence of antibiotic-resistance genes. LaPara was surprised by the aerobic digestion results and plans further study.
Raising the temperature of anaerobic digestion at wastewater treatment plants should not be cost prohibitive, he says, because the digesting bacteria produce methane gas that can heat the reactor.
"This study provides a practical approach for reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance from wastewater treatment plants," comments Amy Pruden, an environmental engineer at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She adds that she is curious to see whether the approach works with resistance genes to other antibiotics.

وأعلن وزير الصحة بدء تطبيق الكود الموحد فى بناء وتجهيز المستشفيات والذى ينطبق على مستشفيات القطاع الخاص والعام على حد سواء اعتبارا من يوم 23 ديسمبر الحالى، مشيرا إلى أنه سيتم توقيع اتفاقية تعاون بين وزارة الصحة والتنمية المحلية يوم 21 ديسمبر بمقر الوزارة وبذلك يتم توحيد البناء والتجديد والإحلال وحتى التجهيزات لجميع مستشفيات الجمهورية سواء الخاصة أو العامة.

يذكر أن المجموعة الوزارية للشئون السياسية والتشريعية عقد أمس اجتماعا برئاسة الدكتور مفيد شهاب وزير الشئون القانونية والمجالس النيابية، وأقرت مشروع قرار رئيس مجلس الوزراء الدكتور أحمد نظيف بإصدار اللائحة التنفيذية للقانون رقم 5 لسنة 201 بشأن تنظيم زرع الأعضاء البشرية التى أعدتها وزارة الصحة.

Children Can Make Smart Breakfast Choices

 There are a lot of advertising dollars being spent trying to sway us, and our children, to buy high-sugar cereals. Saturday morning cartoons are loaded with them. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a TV commercial for Shredded Wheat, All Bran or an organic cereal? In fact, a 2009 survey conducted by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, showed that cereals marketed to our children have 85 percent more sugar, 65 percent less fiber, and 60 percent more sodium, not to mention the additional unnecessary calories that they add to the breakfast bowl. No doubt this is contributing to the epidemic of childhood obesity, but we do need to give our kids more credit about their food choices, at least according to new research by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity that appears in the January 2011 issue of Pediatrics.

The current study included urban children aged 5-12, that contained a mix of English- and Spanish-speaking participants. The 91 participants broke up into two groups, one being offered high-sugar cereal (11-2 grams per serving) and the second offered low-sugar cereal (1-4 grams per serving). In addition, both groups were offered low-fat milk, organce juice, bananas, strawberries and additional sugar to sweeten their bowls.
While both groups took in the same amount of calories, the type of calories they took in varied significantly. Those in the high-sugar cereal group predominantly ate the sugary cereal, while the low-sugar group was more apt to include fruit and juice in their breakfast choice. The conclusion is that children are happy given a selection, but don’t refuse low-sugar cereals, and actually benefit from the addition of fruit and juices to their diet.
"Don't be scared that your child is going to refuse to eat breakfast. The kids will eat it," said study co-author Marlene B. Schwartz, deputy director of Yale University's Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. Meaning that if all you have is low-sugar cereal, they will eat it, but offering them supplemental food, like bananas or berries, along with 100% juice can go a long way in keeping them satisfied.
Two important things to consider when purchasing breakfast cereal is grams of sugar per serving and the serving size. Keeping the sugar under 10 grams per serving is best, under 5 is even better. But the average serving size varies from  3/4 to 1 cup—both less than the size of an average cereal bowl—meaning that when filling up the bowl, your child is getting twice the amount of sugar than you intended. And many go back for seconds, compounding the issue. So look for larger serving portions with less sugar.
